Interview Questions (a sample from Figure 9.1 from the book)

Questions about past positions:

  • How would you describe your performance at your last position?
  • What do you like most about your current or previous job?
  • What did you like least about your current or previous job?
  • How did you gain your knowledge about this industry?
  • Tell me about the kind of customer contact you have had. Describe a typical day.
Questions about this job:
  • What are you looking for in a job?
  • What do you look for in a company that you would like to work for?
  • Why should I hire you?
  • Why do you want to work here?
  • What training or qualifications do you have for a job like this?
Questions about work habits:
  • What have you been praised for in the past two years?
  • What have you been criticized for in the past two years?
  • What does a supervisor do to get the best out of you?
  • Give me an example of a work crisis you were in and how you handled it.
Questions about personal characteristics:
  • How would a friend who knows you well describe you?
  • What are the reasons for your success?
  • How do you establish working relationships with new people?
Questions about values:
  • What is your primary interest? Money? Power? Leisure time? Why?
  • How would you describe success?
  • How would you describe a successful career?
  • Who do you admire and why?
Questions about attitudes:
  • What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced? How did you handle it?
  • How long will it take you to make a contribution here?
  • What do you expect from your employer?
  • Describe the ideal supervisor
Questions about capabilities:
  • What are your strengths / weaknesses?
  • How can you take advantage of your strengths? Compensate for your weaknesses?
  • What job would you like to be doing in the next five years?
Reference Questions (a sample from Figure 12.1 from the book.)

The questions you use to interview references should be based on information you want to confirm from the application and interview. If you noted any areas of concern during the interview now is the time to explore them.

Questions regarding candidate/reference relationship:

  • How long have you known the candidate?
  • What were your position(s) and responsibilities when you supervised the candidate?
Questions regarding the facts:
  • What were the candidates start and end dates of employment?
  • What was the candidates starting pay and ending pay?
Questions regarding past performance:
  • How did the candidate perform compared to standards/expectations?
  • How did the candidate perform compared to others?
Questions regarding personal characteristics:
  • How would you rate the candidates honesty?
  • How would you describe the candidate’s attitude?
Questions regarding the recommendation:
  • What are the areas the candidate should improve to increase success in the future?
  • Would you rehire? Why? Why not?
If in sales:
  • How did the individual work his or her territory?
  • What did the candidate do when faced with a difficult situation, such as being below budget or having a difficult account?
